Featured above is an eye-catching Sun pillar I observed from the Viterbo Airport Control Tower in Italy, at sunrise on February 17, 2020. A layer of fog was covering the surface as sunrise approached. As the Sun cleared the horizon, not only was this superior pillar revealed but also an upper tangent arc. Pillars result when ice crystals in cirrus clouds, or free-falling in the atmosphere, are stacked in a horizontal direction and are slightly tipped toward the observer.
